Community Service

Community service is a major component of student life at Dartmouth, with more than 60 percent of the undergraduate population involved in some form of volunteer work. In the Upper Valley region around Dartmouth, students in the Dartmouth Community Services (DCS), a part of the Tucker Foundation, provide 40,000 hours annually of volunteer service in 50 local service outreach projects and 65 national and international leave-term service programs. Graduate students also participate in these outreach projects as well as those specific to their schools and professional interests.

Program Areas

  • Education: Working with students, whether they are children or adults, inside and out of educational settings
  • Kids and Community-Based Mentoring: Programs such as Big Brother/Big Sister, Just for Kids, Rivendell Boys, Girls Mentoring, among others
  • Health and Fitness: Working with those who are either ill, in the hospital, or in a nursing home
  • Food and Shelter Issues: Working for a local homeless shelter, the Haven, Habitat for Humanity, and Students Fighting Hunger, among others
