    Hoops hype - Get ready for the official kick-off of basketball season with a celebration of Dartmouth spirit. "Spirit Week" at Dartmouth culminates with Hoops Hype 2009, a high-energy, special effects filled event with introductions of the 2009-10 men's and women's basketball teams, giveaways, contests, prizes, and live performances by the Dartmouth Cheer Team and by Ujima dance troupe! 8 p.m. in Leede Arena.

    Live united - Since its founding at Dartmouth in 1971, the Upper Valley United Way campaign has received more than $18 million from Dartmouth's staff, faculty, and students. Today, for the most vulnerable in the Upper Valley community, the need is greater than ever. The Dartmouth College United Way campaign, led by 2009 honorary chair Jim Yong Kim, is now underway with a goal of $225,000. Learn how to contribute, and how the United Way continues to contribute to life in the Upper Valley.

    Tuck sustains - Itamar Goldminz was fresh off participating in a sustainable-living project in Fiji when he arrived at Dartmouth's Tuck School of Business, and quickly put his passion for environmental issues into action by starting a sign-up list for like-minded students on the school's intranet.. Around the same time, Carey Schwaber created a similar list for students interested in sustainable food. The two joined forces and by winter, with the help of the MBA Program Office and the school's blessing, Tuck Sustains was born.

    Gore-fest - It wouldn't be Halloween without a good scary movie, and the Dartmouth Film Society offers a trifecta of tongue-in-cheek terror tonight: "Shaun of Dead" at 7 p.m., "Dead Snow" at 8:45, and George Romero's zombie opus "Night of the Living Dead" at 10:20, all in Spaulding Auditorium. All part of the Film Society's fall series "Six Feet Under." General admission $7; Dartmouth students $5.

    Celebrate! - The reunions continue at Dartmouth this weekend, as the College's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Alumni/ae Association (DGALA) celebrates its 25th anniversary with a full weekend of events. On the schedule: lectures, presentations, social events, and campus tours. New Hampshire Episcopal Bishop V. Gene Robinson speaks on "Faith and Sexuality" Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

    Premiere - Dartmouth's Hopkins Center will host the world premiere of a new piece by Richard Danielpour, one of the most celebrated and recorded composers of his generation, performed by the Grammy-winning Ying Quartet, internationally acclaimed for its engaging, genre-crossing music-making and innovative ways of bringing chamber music to a wider audience. 8 p.m. Friday in Spaulding Auditorium; part of the Ying Quartet's week-long residency at the College.

    100 days in - President Jim Yong Kim gave his first address to Dartmouth's faculty Monday, reflecting on the meaning of Dartmouth's mission, looking back at his first 100 days in office, and looking ahead to challenges facing the College.

    Medicine in the mountains - The people of the Himalayas live amid the world's highest peaks but suffer some of its lowest health indicators. Two young women with Dartmouth ties-a graduate of Dartmouth College and a student at Dartmouth Medical School-recently traveled with health-care teams to remote villages there.

    All in the family - Like home movies from the extended alumni family, VoxBox Multimedia gathers in one place the sights and sounds of reunions, Dartmouth Night, and other alumni events; holiday greetings with vintage photos and Dartmouth performers; and more multimedia.     "Dartmouth's in town again..." - This weekend is Homecoming at Dartmouth, with alumni events and athletic contests all weekend long. It begins Friday night with the annual Dartmouth Night parade and bonfire, and concludes Sunday with films and concerts as well as women's lacrosse and men's ice hockey.
